Talking to your kids is essential when you’re getting divorced

On Behalf of | May 16, 2022 | Family Law

Divorce in Texas and around the country can be stressful. Acknowledging your emotions and talking to your children are essential steps you’ll need to take to get through this ordeal successfully. Surrounding yourself with friends and loved ones may help make this transition easier.

Dealing with your emotions is important

The first step you will likely want to take when getting divorced is acknowledging your feelings. Moving on can be challenging when you’re feeling sad. It’s okay to be hurt or confused in this situation. After thinking things through, you’ll likely start to feel better.

Taking care of your kids

After getting yourself together emotionally, it’s critical to talk to your kids. Following these steps may make the process easier:

• Plan what to say and talk to your kids together – If you and your spouse can talk to your children together, it’s usually best. Planning what you will say and when helps ensure you aren’t blurting it out unexpectedly.

• Explain why it’s happening and emphasize it’s no one’s fault – While you don’t want to go into specific details, it can help to provide general information on why the divorce is occurring. Letting them know you aren’t happy together and have tried to work out your differences helps ensure no one is to blame.

• Tell your children about any changes – Your children will want to know how the divorce will affect them. Explain the changes related to who will leave the home or who they will live with in the future.

• Provide reassurance – They may not want to talk right away. Inviting questions may help them explain their feelings. If you aren’t sure about an answer, tell them you’ll let them know when you figure it out.

Spending time with family and friends can help

Taking time away from the situation by having you and your kids surround yourself with family and friends can help in the healing process. Go out and have fun with people you care about and who care about you.

Getting through a divorce can be challenging. Gathering resources and establishing a support network can be helpful.
